Category Print, Publication, Perfect-BoundFamiliarity with the text was the key to this project. The content was written by
author John Maeda in his textbook The Laws of Simplicity and was going to be the
subject for this 100-page perfect bound sequence. Beginning with reading Mae-
da’s book and picking out a favorite chapter, I iterated through a preliminary
16-page spread. After exploring pacing and typography throughout the pages,
the system’s layout was finalized and proofed. After designing the cover and
receiving the final critique, the project was sent off for print. This book design
allowed me to explore a larger-scale body of work and practice the art of assign-
ing typographic systems to a layout. I learned how the messaging of the text
content can inform a finished work and how publication design is much more
intricate than I initially anticipated.
