Category Print Spreads, Manually-BoundThese eight spread booklets are a set of typographic interpretations of Ellen
Lupton’s essay Thinking With Type.
The focus was to balance legibility and tracking
for the reader while playing with typographic rhythm and style over the spreads. I
gathered my initial sketches and translated them into
sequences of typographic
blocks, with emphasis on ABA patterning. I learned from Ellen Lupton that by
using an empathetic approach to how a reader’s eye follows type on a page, designing type can take new forms. The importance of craft in this project came
to be a key takeaway as well. It was one of the first experiences I had learning how
to carefully craft and bind booklets using only cardstock and masking tape.
